The built-in AI runs on your Mac with Apple Intelligence. Your text is never uploaded, stored or logged.
Secrets stay out
Passwords, keys, tokens and card numbers are hidden automatically before any text is sent to an AI service.
No new account
No TextEditor++ login. Sign-in happens in each provider’s own app, and API keys stay in your Keychain.
Nothing sneaks in
Suggested changes are applied only when you choose, and stay within what you asked for. Each one is a single undo, and your file is unchanged until you save.
One switch turns it off
AI ▸ Turn Off All AI stops Writing Tools, Chat and suggestions until you turn it back on.
We don’t collect it
TextEditor++ never collects your prompts, chats or the text you work on.
The built-in AI needs Apple Intelligence.
macOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence turned on. Other providers work on any Apple Silicon Mac that runs TextEditor++.
Is the AI in TextEditor++ free?
Yes. Writing Tools, Describe your change and the built-in TextEditor++ assistant are free and unlimited, with no account. If you connect Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or an API key, your provider bills you under your own plan; TextEditor++ adds nothing.
Does my text leave my Mac?
Not with the built-in AI: it runs on your Mac with Apple Intelligence. With another provider, what the AI reads goes to that provider to answer you, after passwords, keys, tokens and card numbers are hidden.
Which Macs can use the built-in AI?
Macs with Apple Intelligence, running macOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence turned on. Other providers work on any Apple Silicon Mac that runs TextEditor++.
Can the AI change my files without asking?
Only if you choose Full access. Chats start in Read only, and in Ask before changes every edit and command waits for your approval. Every change can be undone.
Can I use a local model?
Yes. Connect Ollama, LM Studio or any OpenAI-compatible server, on your Mac or your network.
